Which aeromedical examination do you need?
To obtain or maintain a pilot licence, you need a medical examination appropriate to the type of licence you hold.
At AirLein Medical, you can book all Class 2 and LAPL medical examinations, as well as Class 1 and Class 3 renewals
and cabin crew medical examinations. Examinations take place at our practice at Hilversum Airfield.
Below you will find, for each type of medical certificate, who it is for, what is covered during the examination and how long the certificate is valid.
Class 1 medical
Who is this examination for?
A Class 1 medical is required for professional pilots holding a CPL or ATPL, among other licences. AirLein Medical offers Class 1 medical renewals.
What do we examine?
At every examination, we assess your general physical health, blood pressure, vision and hearing. We also test your urine and measure your Hb.
Depending on your age and medical history, additional tests may be required, such as:
- ECG (Every five years up to age 30, every two years up to age 40, annually up to age 50, then at every examination)
- Audiogram (Every five years up to age 40 and every two years after 40)
- Cardiovascular risk profile, including lipid profile (Initial examination after age 40, every five years up to age 49, every three years up to age 59, then every two years)
- Cardiology examination with exercise ECG (First examination after age 65, then every four years)
- Contrast sensitivity from age 60
- Lung function test
- Additional laboratory tests
When can I schedule my renewal examination?
You can have your renewal examination up to 45 days before your current medical certificate expires.
Which licences?
- CPL
- MPL
- ATPL
Validity period
- Up to age 40: 12 months
- Ages 40 to 60, single-pilot with PAX: 6 months
- Ages 40 to 60, multi-pilot: 12 months
- Over age 60: 6 months
Class 2 medical
Who is this examination for?
If you fly privately with a PPL, you need a Class 2 medical. AirLein Medical offers both initial Class 2 examinations and renewals.
What do we examine?
At every Class 2 examination, we assess your general physical health, blood pressure, eyesight and hearing, and test your urine.
At the initial examination, we also carry out a more comprehensive assessment of vision and colour vision, perform an ECG and measure Hb.
Depending on your age and medical condition, additional tests may be required, including:
- ECG (after ages 40 and 50, then every two years)
- Cardiovascular risk profile, including lipid profile (Initial examination after age 40, every five years up to age 49, every three years up to age 59, then every two years)
- Contrast sensitivity from age 60
- Lung function test
- Audiogram (with an instrument rating: every five years up to age 40, every two years after age 40)
- Additional laboratory tests
Initial examination or renewal?
An initial examination is more comprehensive than a routine renewal. Please indicate when booking if this is your first aviation medical examination. If your medical certificate has been expired for more than five years, you will also need an initial examination.
You can have your renewal examination from 45 days before your current medical certificate expires.

- SPL, valid worldwide
- BPL with commercial operation rating
Validity period
- Under 40: 60 months
- Age 40 to 50: 24 months
- Age 50 and over: 12 months
Class 3 medical
Who is this examination for?
A Class 3 medical is required for air traffic controllers and student air traffic controllers. AirLein Medical offers Class 3 medical renewals.
What do we examine?
At every renewal examination, we assess your general physical health, blood pressure, eyesight and hearing, and test your urine.
Depending on your age and medical history, additional tests may be carried out periodically or if indicated, such as:
- ECG
- Audiogram
- Eyeball pressure measurement
- Lipid profile
- Cardiac examination with exercise ECG
- Lung function test
- Additional laboratory tests
Which privileges?
- Air traffic controller licence
- Student air traffic controller licence
Validity period
- Up to age 40: 24 months
- From age 40: 12 months
LAPL medical
Who is this examination for?
A LAPL medical is intended, among others, for recreational pilots flying with a Light Aircraft Pilot Licence or an MLA licence. AirLein Medical offers both initial LAPL examinations and renewals.
What do we examine?
During the examination, we assess your general physical health, blood pressure, eyesight and hearing, among other things, and test your urine.
Colour vision is also assessed at the initial examination.
Depending on your age, medical history and the findings of your examination, additional tests may be required, such as:
- ECG if indicated
- Lung function test if indicated
- Audiogram if indicated
- Hb if indicated
- Additional laboratory tests if indicated
Initial examination or renewal?
An initial examination is more comprehensive than a routine renewal. Please indicate when booking if this is your first aviation medical examination. If your medical certificate has been expired for more than five years, you will also need an initial examination.
You can have your renewal examination from 45 days before your current medical certificate expires.
